From Disaster Hope is Reborn

Ms. Armonie Edwards, lovingly known as Ms. Monie, is an 83-year-old widow, who was living alone at the time the tornado that devastated Abbeville, Alabama last year, destroyed her home and most of her belongings. With the help of Habitat International and WHFH, as well as financial sponsorship and dedicated volunteerism from Dothan's Evergreen Presbyterian Church and Temple Emanu-el, Ms. Monie's dream of rebuilding has come true. She states that she thanks God for all the help that WHFH, Evergreen, and the Temple have given her and the community, and adds, "God helps people through people, and it's through these fine people that he's helped me."

Harvey and Lucy Mae Lynn, Ms. Monie's older brother and sister-in-law, who are 87 and 83 respectively, lived next door to Ms. Monie when the 2002 tornado struck. The Lynn's home and belongings were also destroyed. Many people have asked Mr. Harvey and Ms. Lucy Mae, why at their age, would they want to rebuild a home. Why not live in an apartment? Mr. Harvey is quick to reply that he cannot wait until WHFH completes their house as "I've lived right there on that piece of land in Rockhill Subdivision for forty- five years. Nowhere else could ever feel like home." Mrs. Lucy Mae, who took great pleasure and spent extra time picking out her counter tops, carpet and vinyl, etc. feels the same way, and states, "Yes, Lord, I can't wait to get back over there, and in my new house. That will be one happy day" a dream come true.
